Open Music Therapy Studio at Bridges Learning Center allows students a place to create, be creative and learn all through the expression of sound. Each week a musical instrument is chosen for students to explore: Piano, guitar, electric bass, ukulele, and percussion. This week students explored the Sounds of Space on the piano: High, low, fast, slow and the absence of sound all together. During Open Studio students have the choice to create their own songs and learn adapted musical scores (Star Wars theme, Rocketman by Elton John, and Walking on the Sun by Smashmouth). While playing musical instruments students have the chance to coordinate and synchronize fine and gross motor skills important for development in addition to exploring different ways to communicate emotions. As an added bonus, students learn to use music as a coping skill, which can be used throughout their lifetime to be healthy citizens.
